Komoot opinion: the reality about route planning, offline maps and Garmin export

Komoot helps prepare your bike, hiking, mountain biking or gravel trips through maps, navigation and the community. But some changes in Garmin routes and transfers may disappoint.

Komoot reviews: route, offline cards and Garmin export on smartphone

Opinions about Komoot are often positive on a specific point: the app really helps prepare a bike, hiking, mountain biking or gravel trip without going blind. Returns become more nuanced when it comes to route modification, GPS compatibility or certain pay functions. Before downloading the app or choosing a premium offer, it is better to check if it matches your usage.

What users say about Komoot

Komoot first attracts by a simple promise: turning an idea of exit into an exploitable route, withmap, profile, navigation and suggestions from the community. In public returns, there are very different profiles, road cyclists, engravers, hikers, mountain bikers, bike travelers and occasional users who are mainly looking for a reliable loop near them.

The most common positive points

The main compliment concerns theplanning of routes. Komoot makes it possible to prepare a journey according to the activity chosen, then adjust it with crossing points. For a cyclist or a hiker who does not want to draw all his outing by hand, the saving of time is real. Topographic maps, voice navigationand offline cards also reinforce the interest of the application when leaving the main axes.

The Community dimension is important in the experience. Photos, suggestions, collections and « Incontourable » give concrete ideas of passages, viewpoints or interesting segments. Facing a simple map, Komoot therefore brings a useful layer of inspiration, without asking for long searches elsewhere.

Most common critics

Negative opinions focus mainly on times when the user wants to take over. Some report difficulties in changing parameters such as starting point or direction of travel. Others evoke friction when transferring to GPS devices, especially with Garmin. It's not a blocker for everyone, but for a user who is used to precisely preparing his outputs on computer and then sending them to his meter, it can quickly get annoying.

On Trustpilot, Komoot has 81 reviews, which gives an interesting but not massive feedback base. There are very satisfied testimonies, including one user who has been using the app for 4 years and at least once a week. On the other hand, some opinions stress the technical limitations or the feeling that certain functions are expected to go through a paid offer.

Useful features: where Komoot scores points

Komoot is not just a mobile GPS. His interest lies mainly in the preparation and accompaniment of a complete exit: choosing a type of activity, building a course, visualising the terrain, following the route, then sharing the experience if needed.

Planning, charts and navigation

For hiking, cycling or mountain biking, the app offers interactive maps and useful information to anticipate the terrain. Topographic maps help to understand the terrain, while voice navigation keeps your eyes on the road or trail. Off-line maps are particularly useful in mountain, forest or areas where the mobile network becomes irregular.

The right reflex is to prepare your journey before leaving, especially if the exit is long or isolated. Komoot may suggest a route, but the user must check the sensitive points: road crossings, possible private roads, technical level in mountain biking, too steep portions or coatings not suitable for road bikes. The application helps to decide, it does not replace the field judgment.

Community, collections and inspiration

The routes collections and user contributions give Komoot a travel diary side. You can spot a popular loop, save ideas, view photos and discover recommended passages. For someone who lacks inspiration, it is often more convenient than a blank card.

A route then works as aConductive wire: if it is well built, it guides the user without forcing him to guess everything. Reviews, photos, key segments and points of interest enrich the journey. Before choosing a route, it is therefore still useful to look not only at its distance, but also at the signals that accompany it: recent comments, consistent photos, passages confirmed by several users and announced level compatible with your practice.

Komoot facing Strava, Visorando and AllTrails

The best choice depends less on the reputation of the application than on your actual use. Komoot is strong for planning and exploring, but he does not have exactly the same vocation as Strava, Visorando or AllTrails.

Implementation Main strong point Limit to know Most suitable profile
Komoot Planning cycling, hiking, mountain biking and gravel Some variation and GPS transfer frictions reported Explorers, cyclists, hikers preparing their outings
Strava Sports monitoring, performance, segments and social network Less focused on detailed preparation of nature routes Sportsmen who want to analyse and compare their outings
Visorando Described hikes and very walking approach Less versatile for cycling, gravel or mountain biking Walkers looking for guided walks
AllTrails Trail discovery and community advice Variable quality by area and contribution Walkers and travelers looking for trail ideas

In summary, Komoot is often more relevant if your priority is tobuild a course before leaving. Strava keeps the advantage for sports analysis and emulation. Visorando talks more to hikers who like marked descriptions. AllTrails can be used to quickly discover trails, especially when consulting with other walkers.

Prices and value for money: should Komoot be paid?

Komoot can be used to discover the interface and test planning, but some of the interest is revealed with advanced features, including offline cards and some premium options. Trustpilot review mentions premium option at 60 € per year. This amount must be assessed according to your output frequency, not only according to the list of features.

When the paying offer is justified

If you often go hiking, long-distance cycling or engraved in areas with little network coverage, offline maps and navigation quickly become useful. For a weekly user, subscription can be defended, especially if Komoot replaces several tools: paper card, route search, voice guidance, collection backup and trace sharing.

The price-quality ratio is less obvious for very punctual use. If you take three trips a year around your home, a free app or a simpler solution may suffice. Buying becomes interesting when Komoot really enters your preparation routine.

Checks to be done before committing

Before you pay, test a route close to your habits: a bike loop, a known hike, a gravel ride or a mountain bike route. Check if the proposed route type matches your level, if the route change seems intuitive to you, and if the export to your hardware is working properly. If you are using a Garmin device, pay particular attention to the transfer, since some users report partial compatibility problems.

Our opinion: for whom Komoot is a good choice, and for whom it is less

Komoot is a very good application for those who like to prepare their outings, explore new paths and build on an active community. It is particularly suitable for cyclists, hikers, grave practitioners and mountain bikers who want to combine map, guidance and inspiration. Its approach is more complete than just a GPS tracking tool.

It will be less convincing for users who require perfect compatibility with their entire GPS ecosystem, or who want to change every detail of a friction-free journey very quickly. Criticisms of starting point, direction of journey or some transfers show that experience may vary depending on the material and level of requirement.

The right compromise is to start with free or limited use, on routes you already know. If the proposed tracks are consistent, if the navigation reassures you and if the offline cards meet your needs, Komoot can become an excellent exit companion. If your priority is pure performance, Strava will often be more suitable; If you are looking for hikes described step by step, Visorando also deserves to be compared.

In the end, the reviews on Komoot draw a reliable and inspiring application, but not perfect. Its true value appears when it is used as an active preparation tool, not as a magic GPS. For the right profiles, this is precisely what makes its strength.
