Different types of tarpaulins and covers according to use
Selecting a sheet depends on the storage situation of your boat. The material and cut varies depending on whether the boat remains at dock, on trailer or in a hangar.
The winter taud: integral protection
The overwintering taud covers the entire deck, including the console and sometimes the engine. Made in sturdy materials such as 600D polyester Oxford, it resists the pressures of snow or repeated showers. Its function is to create a waterproof barrier while allowing minimum air circulation to limit condensation under the cover.
The console and seat cover
If you use your boat regularly during the season, an integral tarpaulin is often too burdensome. The console and seat covers are then more suitable. They protect electronic instruments and skai saddleries, sensitive to cracks due to the sun. These protections are quickly created by elastic cords integrated.
Transport tarpaulin on trailer

Technical criteria: polyester 420D or 600D?
The « D » (Denier) indicates the density of polyester fiber. A high figure means a thicker, more abrasion-resistant fabric. For one-off use, the 420D offers a compromise between lightness and protection. For extended external storage, the 600D polyurethane coated is preferable for its increased resistance to tearing.
Performance also depends on the treatments applied to textiles. Effective tarpaulin is imperative anti-UV to maintain flexibility. Waterproofness must be accompanied by breathable capacity. Without ventilation, trapped moisture promotes mould development on mosses and woodwork.
A tarp acts as a global protective filter. It blocks external aggressions such as dust, rain and solar rays while allowing the structure to breathe. A fully sealed vessel ends up self-degrading by internal oxidation. Performance models incorporate vents or micro-perforations to maintain a healthy climate under the cockpit.
How can you shape your protective sheet?
The common error is to buy a sheet that corresponds strictly to the hull length specified by the manufacturer. Accessories such as windshields, handrails or outboard engines increase the actual perimeter to be covered.
