Chikungunya 2025: France faces unexpected fever
Temperatures rising, mosquitoes rising... and more than 900 cases of chikungunya already recorded in metropolitan France since the beginning of the year. Who would have imagined that this famous « bent man's disease » With our neighbors that fast? Intense pains, cascading epidemics and widespread anxiety: but what is really behind this strong return of chikungunya?
Recognize infection, limit the risks, act quickly from the first symptoms, especially in 2025: decryption and gestures that make the difference.
When mosquitoes change daily: symptoms, duration, transmission
One shot, and everything can change. The chikungunya virus, transmitted by the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), has never had so many opportunities to settle in the metropolis, carried by milder winters and a mosquito that colonizes ever more regions. In La Réunion, in Mayotte already affected, and now in the metropolitan area, vigilance is increasing and many question: how to spot an infection?
A virus that strikes without warning... and can linger
The infection often starts brutally: fever that climbs, joint pains on the wrists, ankles, knees – it feels like the whole body is contracting at once. Add headaches, heavy fatigue, sternness, sometimes a rash: it is difficult not to think of a steroid flu. Newborn or weakened seniors can face more severe complications.
The general trend remains reassuring: most of the time, the evolution takes place smoothly. Yet, in one in five people, tiredness and pain play out for weeks or even months – a true « Joint hangover ».
Contagion: mosquito, only relay
No risk of direct human transmission. Only the mosquito, after taking blood from an already infected person, becomes the vector of the virus. As a result, the danger grows where the tiger mosquito thrives.
From diagnosis to good reflexes: react without delay, bet on simplicity
Unexpected fever after a shot? Articulations that come in? Better avoid improvisation. A PCR test (practised in the first week) identifies the virus, especially if a risk zone returns. Subsequently, a simple blood test (serology) validates the diagnosis.
Treatment: support, rest and patience
No magic formula: rest, hydration, paracetamol or acetaminophen to calm fever and pain. Medical follow-up becomes unavoidable if unusual or persistent signs appear, or in the presence of risk factors.
Suspicion? A recent stay in the affected area? A health professional must be consulted without delay. Be careful to avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, which sometimes increase the risk of complications.
Prevention: bet on avoiding injections
No massive vaccination campaign announced for 2025, only certain groups in Réunion and Mayotte currently benefit. To keep the chikungunya away? Arm with repellents, wear long and clear clothes, eliminate all stagnant waters around yourself. Collective demoustication continues to expand, but individual action is decisive.
- Focus on bright and covered clothing, especially in the early and late hours of the day.
- Close doors and windows, install mosquito nets if possible.
- Watch for gutters, pot saucers, vases... anything that could hold a water bottom.
And tomorrow? Patience, vigilance and simple gestures...
The full mosquito season takes all of France in its net, each unprotected bite can be the door to far worse than a simple itching. The dynamics of chikungunya this year show no signs of slowing down, but it is still possible to limit the damage: information, preventive actions, rapid reaction are better than fear or resignation.
