Gastrointestinal in baby: sick baby with thermometer and diapers

Whengastroshows up at thebaby, difficult to ignore the mini storm that shakes the house : weeping, repeated diapers, tired little mines squeeze, and here is the daily life that revolves around the temperature capture and the slightest sign of dehydration. Every winter, parents and bits of cabbage advance together, trying to keep their heads out of the water despite the waves of fever or fatigue – while spotting the warning signals in time. A question of vigilance and benevolence to go through this sometimes challenging period.

Gastro in the baby: how to react to the small winter storm?

When the gastro bursts, the parents' daily life changes quickly: full layers that run along, baby more grouchy than usual, a little fever, lines drawn. Many know this scenario: every winter, millions of families pass through the same passage. But how can we identify the real signs not to be trivialized and avoid the spiral of dehydration in toddlers? Here are some useful landmarks to cross the episode without giving in to panic.

Facing the Wave: When Gastrossing Invites Babies

Gastroenteritis is not limited to childhood memories. In babies, it often disembarks from December to April, with a peak as early as January. The soap opera repeats itself every year: a gargoulous belly, liquid stools, rapid vomiting... sometimes, fever mixes with it. Contagion is often played smoothly in nurseries, waiting rooms, the arms of an already ill boyfriend or through a contaminated toy. Easy to think that there is no way to escape. Yet recognizing the signs of gastro early enough counts a lot before it takes a bad turn.

Figures that speak: an almost inescapable test

In the first year, gastro touches (almost) all babies between 6 months and 2 years. More than one hundred thousand consultations are recorded every winter, just for the cabbages under 3 years old, often because of the famous rotavirus — This virus that loves cold seasons and collective places.

Symptoms: when should we worry?

A baby who suddenly vomits, refuses to eat, has a fever close to 39°C and multiplies liquid stools... Here are the usual signs of gastro. What's most worrying about toddlers? Their speed to dehydrate.

  • Vomiting and bruising, often over 1-2 days
  • Fever: usually between 38.5 and 39°C
  • Diarrhoea sometimes occurs more than a week
  • Lower appetite, fatigue, surrounded eyes
  • Disquieting signs: hollow fontanelle, dry tongue, baby « All soft » or sleepy

When the baby refuses to drink, becomes amorphous or the skin slows to regain its natural color after a little pressure, it is better to intervene quickly. And above all, never take lightly a sudden weight loss!

Monitor the child's weight every day in case of repeated diarrhea and vomiting, keep an eye on his/her behaviour, mouth moisture and the number of wet layers. Babies lose water in no time.

Duration, contagion & incubation: how long does the gastro last in baby?

Incubation — this silent moment that follows contact with the virus — usually lasts between 24 and 72 hours. The episode itself often spreads between 3 and 7 days, but the child remains contagious from the onset of symptoms until a few days after the disappearance of the disorders.

How does the virus spread so fast?

A simple shared game, a kiss or a soiled surface is enough for the virus to circulate. Water and contaminated food are rarely involved in toddlers, but a single hand-washing oblivion may be sufficient to revive the chain.

Respond quickly: the right gestures in case of gastro in the baby

First rule: maintain the baby's hydration, even by small sips, with oral rehydration solution (ORS) as a priority. If vomiting is in the game, drink in several times and serve the drink well fresh.

Treatment and feeding: everything does not stop

Continue infant milk or breast-feeding in case of mild gastro (1 or 2 liquid stools per day) remains recommended. With frequent stools, lactose-free milk can soothe digestion, while everything gets in order.

  • Offer regularly to drink: water, SRO, or usual milk
  • Continue to give meals, in small quantities
  • Rice, banana, carrots, compotes: good allies in the big ones
  • Avoid: sodas, industrial juices and other sweet drinks

If diarrhea sternizes, a doctor may consider a specific antidiarrheal (such as Tiorfan) and suggest a probiotic to help the intestinal flora regain its balance.

Good to know:Anti-vomiting drugs are not suitable for the baby without strict medical advice. A health professional remains the best interlocutor in the face of any doubt.

When to consult or alarm?

On the emergency side, dehydration comes first. If the baby seems to be shot down, refuses to drink, barely urine, vomits everything or if the fever plays the prolongations, it is better to ask the doctor for advice. A rapid succession of liquid stools or a general state of concern should never be taken lightly — I might as well play the card of prudence.

Prevention and vaccination: can gastro?

Careful hand washing, disinfected toys and careful preparation of meals limit the risk, but making the house totally impervious to the virus is very difficult in times of epidemic. Vaccination against rotavirus becomes possible from 6 weeks and up to 6-8 months, on medical advice. It does not appear in the classic vaccination calendar in France and is not taken care of, but sometimes offers real protection for the most fragile babies. Stay vigilant without dramatizing: here's the key. Even impressive at the moment, the gastro doesn't hold the house hostage forever. Simple gestures, a careful watch over hydration and a suitable diet are often enough to go through the storm... without giving in to panic from the first symptoms. Ready to face the next wave?
