Through my field returns and those of the young divers, thelanding parachutenaturally imposed as a major accessory for theSecurityand comfort, whether we are novice or experienced. It is often noted that its effectiveness goes beyond the regulatory framework: it is this small guarantee that is revealed in real situations, especially when visibility and signage become decisive. By sharing my advice and observations, my intention is to help you choose this material and control it in a simple way, so that every use under water will remain synonymous with serenity... and that the boat will return to the good mood.

What is a landing parachute? The essential to have in mind

As soon as you prepare Level 2 or if your practice becomes more regular, the landing parachute imposes itself as a true ally for safety. This small equipment can bring a lot, especially when the current mixes or the surface visibility suddenly disappears. Besides, one understands the interest of a parachute especially after having tested it: I remember a rough climb in the Mediterranean or a simple orange parachute allowed the boat to spot us in time, it is the kind of experience that marks.

Definition and concrete role

It is a textile tube (often in bright orange), designed to be swollen and sent to the surface during decompression bearings. Its mission is to report the position of the diver to the boats or to the crews on the surface: to remain well vertical throughout the climb and visible. For dimensions, the length varies according to the1 to 1.80 metres, the width between15 and 20 cm. The rope provided usually measures9 to 25 m. In practice, it is an affordable accessory that makes the difference.

Why is it mandatory?

Upon access to Level 2, the FFESSM Regulationrenderthe mandatory level parachute within the individual equipment. Since 2011, we no longer talk about a simple recommendation of the club: it is now required during supervised outings or in autonomy. In other words, it is best to avoid any risk of collision or drift in high-pass areas.

VS bearing parachute difference lifting

Typical confusion: landing parachute (for signs, diving protection) or lift parachute (for moving equipment, lifting large objects). Sometimes we see divers coming with the inappropriate model... The landing parachute is thin, relatively long and thought to remain vertical; On the other hand, the lift provides an uplift capacity of up to1000 kgand often has a red or yellow colour.

How to choose your landing parachute? Key points and tricks

Choosing a parachute may seem complex. However, it is better to stay simple to avoid any troublesome mistakes when the time comes (no one likes to miss his demo in front of the band, right?).

Types and characteristics to compare

Most importantly, you will find two large families: the models « Open » (direct inflation, accessible budget) and self-closing versions (integrated overpressure valve, sometimes called « duck beak », which guarantees vertical hold at the lift). On the price side, there are first ranges around13,00 €(Basic PVC), while technical models in highly visible fabric or with integrated valve can climb to59,99 €, not to mention the kits all equipped around88,06 €.

The essentials to remember:

  • ✅ Adapt length and rope to your diving habits, for example12 mfor the Mediterranean,20 mfor Atlantic or deep quarries
  • ✅ Choose the color according to the need: orange for general, yellow or red signs for specific uses
  • ✅ Focus on useful options: stainless steel carabiner, compact spool or mirror or compass
  • ✅ Opt for robust materials such asnylon 210Dorcordura, ensuring a better service life

A trainer pointed out that consulting the technical opinions of specialized clubs or magazines (like the FFESSM or Subaqua Magazine) offers a solid benchmark, far from the mermaids of tape marketing.

Comparison of products, usage and budget

For those who love testing, a synthetic picture is sometimes worth every speech:

Model Average price Length System Use
PVC open entry range 13,00 € 1.20 m Open Leisure, initiation
Fabric/Supap N2 Club 59,99 € 1.80 m Duck beak Multi-level
Parachute kit + accessories 88,06 € 1.80 m Self-cutting Training, clubs
Parachute lifting (objects) 105 to 479.99 € 1-2 m Self-cutting Tek, lifting

Use and deployment: essential security gestures and a few smiles

Once the right model is acquired, the question of technical mastery under water arises. And there, only the experience counts: some still remember their first try with the stress of releasing the wire, or seeing the parachute turn like a capricious kite.

Underwater deployment steps

The usual course: pull out the parachute, attach the rope to the carabiner or spool, inflate via the octopus or the direct-system. Do not let go of the rope until the parachute pierces the surface. Another point to watch: too inflating the parachute or throwing it without anticipating traction can quickly make you waltz up in case of wind, or running on the surface (the anecdote regularly returns to the club).

I strongly recommend to exercise first in a pool or in a quiet area, with particular attention to the self-closing valve to avoid collapse at the critical time.

Maintenance, errors to avoid and returns from the ground

The parachute is a bit the key to the locker room: if you forget it, you immediately regret it. Remember to control the fabric and rope before each exit, rinse thoroughly with fresh water, and store in a dry place. In the field, it is not uncommon to see damaged models or with an out-of-service valve... and this can smack a dive in an instant.

  • ✅ Make sure you have alead(approximately250 to 300 g) to ensure verticality
  • ✅ Consider testing the valve at home, a simple breath to spot a possible leak
  • ✅ Prefer the storage of the rolled parachute, rather than bent at the speed at the bottom of the bag

It seems that a short tutorial video available on specialized sites or from Subaqua Magazine makes it possible to progress very quickly: my son Lucas himself has retained more in two minutes of demo on the port than in a handful of hours of masterful theory.

Like the landing parachute in diving, some equipment, like theessential rowing accessoriesplay a key role in ensuring safety and comfort.

Before diving into the choice of a landing parachute, it may be interesting to know the essential regulations and advice related to theAge to jump parachute.

Regulation and safety: preserving yourself and other divers

Safety must never be overlooked in diving, FFESSM and CMAS systematically remind them of this during certifications. A compliant parachute remains synonymous with serenity for the diver, tranquillity for the guide and guarantees the visibility of the palanque as a whole.

Obligations and standards to know

From level 2, the orange level parachute becomes a requirement in France, recognized by most clubs as an essential access. The industry standards require a standard colour (high visibility orange), certified materials for strength and buoyancy, and the integration of a pressure relief valve on self-closing versions.

A failure can result in an exclusion of the group from the start of the dive, or trigger a sanction during a technical check. Last point to note: to stay strictly in order, the rope must display at least9 m, sometimes12 to 20 maccording to the depth of the expected output.

Emergency colour codes and signs

The color is never anomaly. The bright orange remains used for the most common signs, yellow in case of medical alert, and red for lifting parachutes. Some clubs may adopt reflective tape versions for night dives or rescue. Several professionals in the sector also insist: choosing a very visible parachute means doing between 75 and 85% of prevention work.

Where to buy and at what price? Point of sale and good deals

In-store as well as on the internet, many FFESSM certified models are available: a final check showed34 items referenced. We can find everything, from basic to13,00 €, complete kit to88,06 €, up to the lifting parachute that climbs to479,99 €for technical or specialized uses.

Practical services: delivery, VAS and guarantees

In-store withdrawal within two hours for those who are presses, express delivery the next day on the majority of plants. Authorized resellers offer simple return policies, guaranteed or refunded, and promotional operations sometimes up to and including-37 %: an informed diver can spot these seasonal reductions or on the flagship products.

Advisory question and field experience

Engage an advisor, see and touch the product in radius, compare on a painting or watch an explanatory video on site, all this makes it easy to choose in store. Lucas, just before his passage N2, found the ideal model following a spontaneous exchange with the seller of the Palanque it is often the human who makes the difference, even in the diving equipment.
